Mercedes-Benz has launched the Marco Polo campervan in the UK. The new luxury camper, which is based on the V-Class and is built for Mercedes by German converter, Westfalia, was due to be launched two years ago but is only now arriving in the UK.

The new four-berth campervan, which will go head-to-head with the VW California, comes well equipped with a rising-roof complete with double bed and a rear bench that converts into a second double. The rest of the layout is the typical side-kitchen format found in most campervans.

There are two versions available – the entry Sport Marco Polo and the range topping AMG Line Marco Polo. Both are very well equipped and come powered by the Mercedes Euro VI 2.1-litre twin-turbo diesel producing either 163bhp and 380Nm of torque or 190bhp and 440Nm of torque. Both are coupled to Mercedes’ seven-speed fully automatic gearbox.

They sit on a 3,200kg chassis and have between 760 and 765kg of payload depending on the engine choice. Both are under 2m high (1.980cm) with the roof down and are 5.1m long.

The Sport comes with electric sliding door (on the offside), two swivel and heated captain’s cab seats, automatic climate control, sat-nav, 18” alloy wheels, leather upholstery, yacht wood flooring, external hook-up point and water tank filler, wardrobe and underseat storage, a side-kitchen with fold-out table, two-burner hob, sink and top-opening fridge and an electric pop-up roof with a two-berth bed, and a two-seat rear bench seat that converts into another double bed. There is ambient lighting throughout and both models come with a camping table plus two chairs with storage bag.

The AMG Line adds even more spec, including 19” alloys, spoiler, coloured and lettered brake calipers and sports suspension.

Prices start at £53,180 for the entry-level V 220 d Sport. The V 220 d AMG Line is £55,320, the V 250 d Sport £55,055 and the V 250 d AMG Line is £57,195. All are are available through Mercedes’ own finance and PCP offerings.

But, as the new models are built on a passenger base vehicle, the Marco Polo will be subject to the ‘luxury road tax’, which means £500 for the first year and then £450 for subsequent years.

Standalone options include metallic paint (£645); Comand Online infotainment system (£1,795); 360° camera (£335); extra individual seat in the middle row (£1,045); side awning (£695); and auxiliary heating (£1,345 – available across the entire V-Class range).
