Sunseeker Supporting BLUE, as Can You

The cruising lifestyle depends wholly on the health of the oceans. With that in mind, more yachting companies are supporting ocean-conservation causes. Sunseeker is the latest, committing to a long-term partnership with Blue Marine Foundation, a.k.a. BLUE. What’s more, Sunseeker customers can help the non-profit as well.

Founded seven years ago, BLUE is focused on solving overfishing. In fact, its founders are the same individuals behind the documentary The End of the Line, about the global consequences of unregulated fishing. BLUE helps create marine reserves with governments, plus teaches fishermen sustainable practices. By 2020, the non-profit wants to have at least 10 percent of the world’s oceans protected.

Sunseeker’s CEO, Phil Popham, says he was struck by what BLUE has achieved thus far. “This is a cause which really resonates with me, as I am sure it will with our owners, too,” he explains. “Our oceans are a vital resource, and it is essential we all do what we can to preserve them.”

One way that Sunseeker plans to do that is to encourage customers to consider their own impact on the waters where they travel. In addition, the yacht builder will also encourage them to join the Blue Marine Yacht Club (BMYC). BMYC is a virtual yacht club. It brings together yacht and superyacht owners, as well as industry firms, to support the foundation’s ocean-conservation efforts. In fact, membership costs go directly to various BLUE initiatives.

One such initiative meeting with success is cleaning up plastic waste in the Med. BLUE also created a marine reserve around Ascension Island, located approximately halfway between the tip of South America and Africa. It has additionally introduced sustainable fishing to the villagers of Greece’s Aeolian Islands.

Clare Brook, the foundation’s CEO, comments, “We hope that through this partnership, Sunseeker and their clients—people who really love and understand the sea—will be able to enjoy its unspoiled beauty for generations to come.”
