EMS completes methanol propulsion design for Archipelago Yachts

Engineered Marine Systems (EMS) has completed its design phase to integrate a methanol propulsion system for the Archipelago Yachts’ Archipelago zero.63. The firm says it hopes the development will help drive the future uptake of alternative fuels and sustainable propulsion technologies across the marine industry.

The vessel will use a methanol-to-hydrogen fuel cell for electrical power generation, with the engine still being compatible with traditional diesel.

According to Pym, the project presented a myriad of challenges, namely safety, storage, equipment selection and weight implications. Another key challenge of using methanol is its low flash point (12 degrees Celsius) and the need for more volume compared with diesel.

To mitigate the risks associated with a low flash point, strict conditions are needed for the storage of methanol onboard, including the location, protection of the fuel tanks and ventilation. To overcome this, EMS says it worked with RIX Industries to refine and integrate its hydrogen generator system and develop a storage concept that efficiently distributes weight and saves space.
