WaterCar, an amphibious vehicle maker, has been making hybrids that travel on land and water since 1999 and is now out with a hybrid gas/electric model called the WaterCar-EV.
The California, US-based company’s latest offering morphs from what it calls a “neighborhood electric vehicle” into a 17ft boat by merely pushing a button.
“The WaterCar-EV frees you from roads and maps, allowing you to travel seamlessly between land and sea. Adventure and possibility are at your disposal,” the company’s website proclaims.
The WaterCar-EV boasts foam-filled aluminium hull and state-of-the-art marine-grade electronics, with touchscreen interfaces. A 48V lithium-ion electric motor powers the vehicle on land, but once it takes to water, a Mercury 115hp outboard takes over the propulsion duties. The company website anticipates a fully electric version in the future.
“At present, outboard motor manufacturers are diligently working to create high-performance electric outboards. Although this is emerging technology, there’s intense competition to be the first to offer a high-horsepower electric outboard by early 2024. WaterCar is closely monitoring these advancements.
“As major OEMs finalise their testing and designs, the race tightens. WaterCar is poised and ready for this evolution; the moment an electric outboard is launched, we’ll introduce the WaterCar-EV.”
