    ‘light au lait’ by ingo maruer and fabien dumas.As the name implies, the form of the ‘light au lait’ lamp involves a cup, saucer and spoon to create a whimsical wall-mounted lamp, blurring the boundary between art and functional design. the drinking vessel acts as the main shade of the lighting piece, connected to the saucer by a movable arm, allowing the user the adjust its position horizontally or vertically.

    Lighting company faro barcelona introduced ‘han’, a lamp-coat hanger designed by álvaro goula and pablo figuera. the product is the result of a first collaboration between both spanish studios. ‘when we were asked to design a wall lamp which at the same time had to be a coat hanger.

    Hobo Lighting Series by Studio Aisslinger for Wästberg

    Studio Aisslinger designed a series of lights that were created in conjunction with Stockholm’s Hobo Hotel, which they were also responsible for. Swedish manufacturer Wästberg was on board to work with them on the Hobo Lamp Family that evoked the same look and feel of the hotel’s interior. The result is a collection of lamps that come as either suspension lamps, table, or hook lamps, which can be used alone or in clusters.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    Working together with 3M architectural markets, new york designer todd bracher has conceived ‘lightfalls’, an experimental iteration of the american company’s modular architectural lighting system utilizing the ‘virtual LED’ that is enabled by 3M technology. the ‘virtual LED’ is a nice attempt at reducing energy costs. in the ‘lightfalls’ installation pictured below, only 12 LED bulbs have been utilized in order to illuminate the wall’s expansive surface. 

    Elizabeth Salonen Hand-knits Loop Lamp Collection

    ‘loop lamps’, designed by elizabeth salonen of mottoform studio, are a collection of prototype light designs that combine hand-knit paper yarn with LEDs. the lamps are designed to be sculptural, functional and energy-efficient. ‘loop lamps’ are an exploration of how tradition and craft (knitting) can merge with technology (LEDs) in the creation of functional objects. the soft lampshade forms were hand-knit and crocheted with finish paper yarn by local artisans. with the use of LED technology, the collection is lightweight, emits less heat than conventional bulbs, and can be used in exploratory lighting design.
