    Progress Updates about LiDAR Industry Players in 2018

    LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has been one of the technology focuses in the past two years as it is a key technology for automotive vehicles and many other applications. According to “2018 Infrared Sensing Application Market Report” by LEDinside, the market value of LiDAR laser is expected to reach US$ 154 million in 2020.



    Worldwide LiDAR sensor producers and semiconductor firms have been pushing LiDAR development and extending applications through collaboration with other technology partners. Apart from self-driving technology, LiDAR sensors could be widely utilized in various applications including intelligent transport system, drone, geographical measurement and more.



    LEDinside has continued to track and collect information of LiDAR technology. As several major sensor developers and new startups have reported their progresses in the past year, LEDinside listed the updates of the industry in 2018 for readers to keep up with the latest news of LiDAR development.



    Velodyne LiDAR reduces price and promotes road safety with autonomous vehicles


    Velodyne LiDAR invented and patented the world’s first 3D real-time LiDAR sensor for autonomous vehicles. In January 2018, Velodyne LiDAR cut the price in half of its most popular LiDAR sensor, the VLP-16, aiming to make LiDAR products more accessible to speed up the development of self-driving technology for improving road safety.

     

    By July, Velodyne announced that it has adopted Renovo’s operation system for its new sensor Velodyne VLS-128 to increase the reliability and safety for autonomous vehicles in complex driving conditions. The company also provided its LiDAR sensors to ThorDrive, an autonomous vehicle startup for commercial autonomous vehicle services.



    Innoviz partners with Magna to supply LiDAR for BMW


    Israel-based LiDAR developer Innoviz announced in 2017 that it would be ready to mass produce LiDAR products for L3-L5 autonomous driving by 2019. After the announcement, the company launched its autonomous driving LiDAR, InnovizPro, in January 2018.

The lamp came about as part of a collaboration between CNVS, ATÖLYE Labs’ furniture brand, and architect/artist Buşra Tunç, and is a study in minimalism and multifunctionality. In addition, it has partnered with non-profit organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to create an educational website providing information about how autonomous vehicles can help to prevent roadway collisions.

    Pioneer and MooVita, an A*STAR spinoff company focusing on autonomous vehicle, are going to initiate a trial run of an autonomous shuttle bus equipped with Pioneer’s 3D-LiDAR sensor within the campus of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.     Analog Devices Partners First Sensor to Develop LiDAR Products for Autonomous Driving

    Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announced the collaboration with First Sensor AG to develop products aimed at speeding the launch of autonomous sensing technology serving unmanned automotive, aerial and underwater vehicles in transportation, smart agriculture, industrial manufacturing and other industries. As part of the collaboration, Analog Devices and First Sensor are developing offerings that shrink the LiDAR signal chain to enable higher system performance as well as reduce size, weight, power and cost for manufacturers designing sensing and perception technology into their autonomous safety systems. The companies also plan to develop other LiDAR products that will serve automotive and industrial manufacturing applications.

    Automotive applications mark a niche market for global LED makers. While the developing electronic vehicle and autonomous driving technology with higher requirement for power saving open more opportunities for LED producers, LED technology progress also supports more application options for automobile manufacturers.

Velodyne has strategically teamed with Idriverplus to help Idriverplus with its efforts for mass production of commercial autonomous vehicles, which include street cleaners, passenger cars, and logistics vehicles.
