    Research Shows Artificial Light at Night Might Increase Virus Transmission by Birds

    Artificial Light at Night Virus Transmission Birds

    A research shows that birds exposed to artificial light at night might increase the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV).


    West Nile Virus that infects birds and other animals including humans. The virus can cause West Nile fever for people and sever disease in horses. The virus is transmitted by birds and mosquitos.


    The study led by Meredith Kernbach, a PhD student in the University of South Florida College of Public Health, suggested that wild birds who carry the virus would remain infectious two days longer if exposed to artificial light at night time, leading to higher potential of virus spread.

    Samsung SDS and Telensa Partner for Smart City Infrastructure and Data Solutions

    Samsung SDS, the digital arm of Samsung, and Telensa, a leader in smart street lighting and smart city data, announced their partnership for smart city projects. The two companies are collaborating on smart street lighting and the Urban Data Project, a cloud platform that creates a trust infrastructure for urban data which enables cities to collect, protect and use their data for the benefit of all citizens.     NEMA Calls on Secretary of Energy to Complete Rulemaking for General Service Lamps

    ROSSLYN, Va.—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has formally requested that the Secretary of Energy complete a rulemaking for general service lamps (light bulbs) that Congress required in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA-2007). The Department of Energy (DOE) began the rulemaking in December 2013 and published two rules on January 19, 2017, addressing only one of the issues that Congress required for the rulemaking. These rules did not address the key issue on which Congress required DOE to act: whether or not standards for general service incandescent lamps should be amended to be more stringent than the standards for those lamps that Congress enacted in EISA-2007. Nor did the rules address robust standards for light-emitting diode (LED) lamps that were originally proposed by DOE in 2016.

    Telensa to Provide Smart Street Lighting Infrastructure for UK City

    Telensa, expert in smart street lighting and smart city applications, announced that it has been selected by the council of Sandwell in UK to provide a smart street lighting solution as part of the region’s 2030 Vision Initiative. The Council plans to install nearly 4,000 lights by 2020, with the intention to increase this to over 11,000 by 2022, which will be wirelessly connected and managed using Telensa’s PLANet system. The Council is also converting all their streetlights to LED as part of the upgrade. PLANet will give the Council control over lighting levels, allowing them to remotely tailor for each location, in addition to energy and maintenance cost savings.
