    AMS Succeeds in Osram Buyout with Second Bid

    Austrian sensor company AMS has successfully takeover Osram with its EUR 4.6 billion (US$5.9 billion) bid in the second attempt by achieving the acceptance threshold of 55% of share. Both AMS and Osram published the final result on December 6, 2019.

    IKEA Ventures Into Smart Home Products With Trådfri Lighting Series

    IKEA has introduced smart functionality into its new Trådfri lighting range, as it takes its first major step into the Internet of Things.The range consists of bulbs, LED panels and cabinet doors that can be controlled using a remote or app. Sensors are an optional extra, allowing the lights to switch on and off automatically when someone enters or leaves a room.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    Osram Strengthens Digital Business with Acquisition of Trilux Subsidiary

    Osram is strengthening its electronic component business with the acquisition of BAG electronics, a Trilux subsidiary. BAG specializes in LED modules and software for innovative LED lighting solutions. The company, based in Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, was previously part of the Trilux Group. Following the takeover, its 380 employees have moved to Osram. At the same time, a strategic five-year supply contract including a minimum sales volume has been agreed, with Osram supplying Trilux with components for use in its lights. BAG generated revenues of around €50 million in 2017.

    Cree Acquires Infineon RF Power Business for € 345 Million.

    Cree, Inc. has acquired assets of Infineon Technologies AG Radio Frequency (RF) Power Business for approximately € 345 million. The transaction expands the Cree Wolfspeed business unit’s wireless market opportunity. Infineon continues to drive key growth areas such as electro-mobility, autonomous driving, renewables and technologies for a connected world. The transaction has closed and is effective from March 6, 2018.

    Sensor solution supplier AMS updated the progress of its acquisition of Osram and reported its financial expectations for the first quarter of 2020 after assessing the COVID-19 situation.

    Osram announced the completion of the acquisition of Ring Automotive, a British aftermarket specialist. The acquisition was revealed in the end of January 2019.

    Osram Emphasizes Its Focus on Semiconductor Development

    Osram has been addressing its position as a high-tech company. At the Osram Opto Semiconductors Market and Technology Day in Munich, Olaf Berlien, CEO of Osram Licht AG, noted again that, “Osram is very well positioned strategically and financially for the technologies and trends of the future. We are becoming the leading photonics champion. Our semiconductor segment OS forms the technological backbone of our strategic development."

    Lighting Business Acquisitions: Leviton Buys Viscor; ALW Purchases v2 Lighting Group

    U.S.-based Lighting control supplier Leviton announced that it has acquired Viscor, the largest independent lighting manufacturer in Canada; while Architectural Lighting Works (ALW) reported the acquisition of v2 Lighting Group.

    Infineon Acquires SiC Wafer Technology Startup Siltectra

    Infineon Technologies has announced the acquisition of Siltectra, a Dresden-based start-up which developed an innovative technology, named Cold Split, for processing crystal material. The company was acquired for EUR 124 million (US$141.38 million).

    AMS Launches New Takeover Offer to Osram with Same Price and Lower Acceptance Rate

    AMS re-approached Osram with a new bidding offer launched on October 18. With the new offer, the Austrian company aims to acquire Osram with a price of EUR 41 (US$ 46) per share with the minimum acceptance rate of 55%.
