A new Ikea store here is causing severe traffic congestion — to the point that the local government is threatening to halt business there unless the home furnishings giant comes up with a solution.

The Korea Times reported that the store — operating under a mall label — opened Dec. 18 under temporary approval from the local government. It is South Korea’s first Ikea store and drew more than 48,000 people on opening day, filling its lot with more than 2,000 vehicles, the report said.

Frustration over the congestion “has reached boiling point,” an unnamed source told the paper.

“Not only drivers but also people living or working near the outlet are affected,” the source said.

The local government is demanding the Sweden-based retailer come up with a “dramatic breakthrough” by Wednesday, or the mall would close from Jan. 15.
