E-commerce major Amazon India has forayed into furniture sales and would set up five more fulfilment centres (FCs) or warehouses in the country before the end of the current year, a top official said.
The e-commerce behemoth has just launched its range of furniture products and would set up three out of the five FCs in Tamil Nadu, said Sumit Sahay, director, category management, Amazon India.
Amazon now has 22 FCs across the country, including one centre in Chennai. The online retailer is logging a growth in excess of 150% after registering a whopping 250% increase in sales during 2015. "We see the momentum continuing for the rest of the year," Sahay said.
The warehouse space with the e-commerce giant, which recently crossed the milestone of 1-lakh sellers on an overall basis, would increase to 7.5 million cubic feet from the present 6 million cu. ft by the end of the current year, he added.
The option of buying furniture is available only in about 20 cities. Buyers would be able to place orders only if they reside within a certain distance from the seller, Sahay stated.
