Maison & Objet’s Rising Talent Awards Highlight Chinese Designers
    December 19,2018

PARIS—Emerging designers from China will be showcased during Rising Talent Awards China at Maison & Objet Jan. 18 to 22.

Following the success of editions featuring young designers from the United Kingdom, Italy and Lebanon, Maison & Objet and collaborative partner DesignChain offered emerging Chinese talent the chance to introduce their work to an audience of international professionals.

This year’s selection process included five young designers selected by the jury and one selected via a call for entry. Participating are Frank Chou, Chen Furong, Mario Tsai, Hongjie Yang, Ximi Li and Bentu.

The designers were heralded for their talent, emotional depth and creativity, with some preferring a China-centric approach, while others are presenting work that exemplifies multicultural influences from studying, working and living abroad.

“With the rapid growth of the Chinese economy and the need for a cultural expression of its own, we see a large number of emerging designers that have started to create their own voice that deals with issue of heritage and identity,” said juror Lyndon Neri of Neri &Hu, a Shanghai architecture and design practice.

“These six talents are setting new standards, whilst balancing creative vs. commercial demands,” added Luca Nichetto, an Italian industrial designer and juror.

Other jury members were Liu Xu, chairman of China National Interior Design Association; Ming Tong-He, former chief architect of Shanghai Xian Dai Architectural Design Co. Ltd.; sculptor and artist Qu Guangci, who is also artistic director for the design brand X+Q Art; Tom Dixon, a London-based lighting and furniture designer; and Rossana Hu of Neri&Hu.
