Premier Li Keqiang Talks to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the Phone | Coronavirus
On the evening of 9 February, Premier Li Keqiang took a phone call from German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They exchanged views on the prevention and control of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP).
Premier Li noted that the Chinese government is making robust efforts in a lawful, science-based and orderly way to control the outbreak, and is going all out to treat patients and ensure supply of key medical resources and daily necessities. He stressed that the Chinese government puts people's life and health front and center. China has been open, transparent and highly responsible in the outbreak response, and prompt in releasing information to both its own citizens and the international community. The measures China has taken go well beyond what is required by the International Health Regulations and the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The Chinese medical workers fighting on the front line exemplify dedication, professionalism and a tremendous sense of responsibility. We will do everything in our power to protect their physical and mental well-being. The Chinese government and people have the confidence and capability to defeat the epidemic.
Li emphasized that China hoped Germany and the wider global community would stay cool-headed, support China's outbreak response, maintain normal bilateral exchanges and enhance international cooperation on public health security. He also expressed the hope for Germany to facilitate China's purchase of German medical supplies through commercial channels.
Merkel said Germany has followed the development of the epidemic closely. The Chinese government has acted resolutely and its actions have won extensive support of the Chinese people. Germany has followed a cautious approach, worked to enhance intra-EU coordination, and refrained from imposing excessive restrictions. She expressed appreciation for China's support and assistance to the German nationals in China, and said that Germany is ready to strengthen cooperation with China on epidemic control, continue to provide China with assistance in medical supplies, and do what it can to support China in defeating the epidemic. She also paid tribute and extended best wishes to Chinese healthcare workers.
