Apple, Amazon, Google and others launch new smart home connectivity standard Matter
Source:77°     May 13,2021

According to reports, the Connectivity Standards Alliance, formed by large technology companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Google, announced yesterday the launch of "Matter", a new, interoperable and secure connection standard for smart home devices.

Matter, formerly known as "Project CHIP (full name Project Connected Home over IP)", is an IP-based unified connection protocol that will be used to build and connect the IoT ecosystem. It can be exempt from authorization and communicate between various smart devices; in addition, it can also be used as a visa function to ensure that projects built on this standard are reliable, safe, and can work together.

With Matter, consumers and businesses can choose the brands they want to use in smart homes or commercial buildings and be confident that they can operate smoothly.

Homeowners, especially those who live in smart homes with multiple smart devices (such as smart locks, thermostats, or smart speakers), can easily add new devices with the Matter logo and simply code them and set up to connect your homes as one. And those companies that rely on the intelligent Internet of Things can rely on a network to keep their operations running smoothly.

Matter ensures that smart home devices are compatible with smart home services and voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa, HomeKit, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. In other words, no matter which kind of voice assistant or service users are using, they can control smart home devices certified by Matter. Matter considered the following key attributes when designing and developing: simplicity, interoperability, reliability, security, and flexibility.

Matter's first specification version includes support for existing networks such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth LE.

The first batch of devices certified by Matter is expected to be released at the end of 2021. Smart home equipment manufacturers are developing products such as light bulbs, plugs, sockets, thermostats, door locks, sensors, curtains, TVs, etc. that are compatible with Matter.
