U.S. home design platform Shutterfly acquires home improvement e-commerce Spoonflower for $225 million
Source:77° Global Furniture Media     August 13,2021

On August 10, the American personalized design platform Shutterfly completed the acquisition of Spoonflower, a global home furnishing, customized fabric and wallpaper e-commerce platform, for US$225 million.

Shutterfly customers buy custom-designed products on the Spoonflower global artist market, and designers and artists will be able to sell their designs or ideas on the Shutterfly platform.

Shutterfly' s huge manufacturing market can help Spoonflower expand to meet the needs of consumers, designers and artists, and Spoonflower’ s design library adheres to "rapidly launching new product lines, including fabrics, home decorations and wallpapers, to improve customization and production efficiency. The concept of "to a higher level" can feed back Shutterfly.

It is understood that this acquisition aims to expand the depth and breadth of consumers’ creation, customization and purchase of home furnishings including fabrics on the Shutterfly platform, which can bring Shutterfly’ s 21 million active users and more than 3 million independent users on the Spoonflower global market. The artist' s design is deeply connected and bound to seek future development and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.

Although the COVID-19 is still raging, the home decoration market has achieved substantial growth. Even if the industry is facing serious challenges in meeting consumer demand, such as rising raw materials, insufficient supply chains, rising labor costs, etc., projects and orders have to be postponed for several months, but consumer demand for home decoration continues to increase.

Hilary Schneider, CEO of Shutterfly, said, “This strategic acquisition helps us expand our focus on custom home furnishings and will provide more convenient and simple personalized and custom home furnishings”.

In addition, Shutterfly will strategically integrate its supply chain, technology and production process vertically to provide Spoonflower with high-quality products.

In this regard, Spoonflower general manager Michael Jones said, "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to provide Shutterfly customers with more custom-designed products, including fabrics, sheets, bedding, etc."

Through this acquisition, although Shutterfly and Spoonflower continue to operate independently, the two parties work together to cope with growing market opportunities and implement strategic long-term cooperation, which has effectively filled a huge gap in the market and made the total target market value overturned.
