Lea Inds. recalls 63,000 children's beds to fix fall hazard
    May 21,2013

Youth furniture resource Lea Inds. is recalling more than 63,000 children's beds due to a fall hazard involving the side mattress support rails.

The recall covers some 59,200 panel, loft and bunk beds sold in the U.S. and 4,200 sold in Canada, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which posted the recall on its website Tuesday. A total of 34 youth bed collections are affected.

Manufactured overseas, the beds were sold at Direct Buy stores and other furniture retailers from August 2008 through March 2013 for between $400 and $3,000. They also were sold on Amazon.com and other websites.

Platform beds manufactured since 2010 are not included in the recall, the CPSC said.

The CPSC posted a complete listing of the recalled beds on its website at http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2013/Lea-Industries-Recalls-Childrens-Beds/.

The CPSC said there have been 22 reported incidents involving the recalled beds in the U.S. and one in Canada since 2009. Many of these have occurred this year, which prompted Lea to help institute a recall, a company official said.

"We sell a lot of beds, and when we noticed a lot of uptick in reported incidents this year, we realized steps needed to be taken this year in terms of a recall," said Kathy Liebmann, a spokeswoman for Lea parent La-Z-Boy.

Two injuries regarding the beds have been reported, including a 2009 incident in Madison, Wis., in which an 11-year old girl was putting a fitted sheet on the top bunk. The child, mattress and bed supports collapsed on her six-year-old sister in the bed below, causing a head injury to the girl that involved a cut to her face. The injury was treated in a hospital emergency room, the CPSC said.

Liebmann said the beds originally passed independent safety tests based on ASTM International standards. But once the company determined there was a problem, it developed a new test in conjunction with the CPSC over the past few months. Those tests resulted in the development of the new side rail system that Lea is providing to customers.

La-Z-Boy and the CPSC have advised consumers to stop using the beds and contact Lea Inds. at (888) 770-7116 or visit the company online at www.leaindustries.com for the free replacement side rails.

Lea also is asking retailers that sold the beds for customer lists so it can send out recall letters to consumers, company officials said. If retailers don't want to share the lists, Lea is providing them with the recall letter to send to their customers.
