Interior Define, an online, build-to-order furniture company launched six months ago, is turning heads in the financial industry and may be closing in on an additional $1 million in funding from venture capitalists.
The company is unusual for speedily managing customized upholstered furniture orders produced in China. Since its start-up, sales have increased 20 to 25 percent each month. In April the company received $2.2 million in financing, including from venture capital firm Peterson Partners, and $1.5 million in Series A investment from Groupon. One of its advisors is Andy Dunn, the high profile also built Bonobos, a trendy online men's boutique.
Customers can select furniture prototypes and customize the product, from fabric to leg shapes, to suit their tastes. For pieces with length-customization options, customers can alter the dimension of a configuration by 4 inches -- increasing or decreasing its size uniformly and proportionately across all sections of a sofa, for example.
Interior Define reportedly has 15 employees in a factory in China who work with suppliers and other manufacturers to produce the finished pieces to customers. It says custom furniture takes 12 weeks from order entry through delivery by ship until arrival in the client's home. Features such as kiln-dried hardwood frames are touted at the site.
Primarily an online venture, Interior Define does have a brick-and-mortar showroom in Chicago’s trendy Wicker Park neighborhood.
