This year’s best furniture designs were recognized during the High Point Market at the Pinnacle Awards banquet, hosted by the American Society of Furniture Designers. Here’s a look at the winners in 17 categories, along with judges’ comments about them.

 

 

Major collections: Chris Bergelin and Thad Bergelin, Mesa Collection for Century Furniture. -- “The multitude of different looks in the Mesa Collection by Century Furniture is the perfect answer to eclectic style. The pieces stand alone as well as together. This is an invitingly livable group with outstanding texture in the finishes.”

Student award: Rebecca Goddard, Appalachian State University, for her Anova Side Table. -- “This original design by Appalachia State University student Rebecca Goddard is reminiscent of wind chimes that make us feel happy. The continuous flow of wood is a thoughtful detail in the waterfall edge. With the high caliber of student entries, there is tremendous hope for the future of outstanding furniture design!”

 

Occasional tables: Links Cocktail Table by Pride Sasser for Century Furniture -- “The impressive 80 hours of work producing the crystal inlay of stone on the Links Cocktail Table by Century Furniture reflects a fashion-inspired composition suitable for multiple aesthetics.”


 

{Awsome Blossom…}Occasional storage: Awesome Blossom by the Caracole design team for Caracole -- “Delicately placed crystals transform chinoiserie with a sparkle effect on the Awesome Blossom Chest by Caracole. The artwork is lovely and tasteful. The fusion of modern style and functionality is enhances with touch-release hardware, too.”



 

Youth furniture: Bellamy Collection by Michael Warren, Shannon Lookabill and Andrea Otto for SmartStuff by Universal Furniture -- “Vintage flavor is back better than ever! There’s tons of function built into the Bellamy Collection from Smartstuff by Universal along with lots of great options in a wide range of details.”


 

Casual dining: Kissing Butterflies Dining Table by Mandy Shanahan for Phillips Collection -- “Romance is aflutter with the rustic, organic flair in the Kissing Butterflies Dining Table by the Phillips Collection. The juxtaposition of the wood slab top and stainless metal base takes casual dining up a huge notch!”

 

Formal dining: Do a 360 by the Caracole design team for Caracole -- “Here’s a new twist on elegance with the graceful yet sculptural shape from Caracole. Do a 360 boasts a combination of materials with a polished sheen.”


 

Motion upholstery: Morris Chair and Ottoman by Noah Packard for American Leather -- “This is certainly not your daddy’s recliner! The clean lines and interesting use of mixed materials in the Morris Chair and Ottoman from American Leather will lend appeal to a younger audience while the beauty of the walnut serves to bring the outdoors inside.”


 

Stationary upholstery: Niagara Collection by Stanley J. Friedman for American Leather -- “Linear curves combine with a floating effect for fresh appeal in American Leather’s Niagara Collection. The split back cushion contributes to the sweeping arc.”



 

Leather upholstery: Snello by Kelvin Ng for Kelvin Giormani by Planum -- “Take your pick of a flange or leaf pattern in beautiful quilted detailing on Snello by Planum. Sleek stainless legs heighten the distinctive, chic silhouette.”

 

Lighting: Rockstar Sixteen Light Pendant by Steve Nadell for Corbett Lighting -- “Corbett Lighting offers a dramatic art form that the judges identified as “jewelry for the home.” This show-stopping fixture is not for the faint of heart … it’s simply gorgeous!”


 

Accessories: Vintage Vinyl Floorcloths by Dani Cripe, Alysha Simko, Nicole Shenk and Lea Brubaker for Spicher and Co. -- “Just like last year, the judges saluted the floor covers category as the best decorative accessory in today’s homes, especially noting that it provides a custom look that is easily changeable. The Vinyl floorcloths by Spicher and Co. utilized innovative materials at a great price point.”


 

Home office: Workwell Home Office (5275-10) by Taylor West for Hooker Furniture Corp. -- “What happens when you take a typically masculine category and give it graceful curves? The Workwell Home Office by Hooker Furniture is very pretty and feminine and at the same time funky with its golden touch and wallpaper insert.”



 

Home entertainment: Corridor 8179 by Matthew Weatherly for BDI -- “Cheers to BDI’s design innovation in home entertainment! The linear geometry of the series gives rise to mixing and matching the pieces with a wide variety of furniture styles. Ample functionality translates to selling power.”


 

Summer/casual: Palm Chair & Ottoman by Carlo Baso for David Francis Furniture -- “Way cool” is the way the judges described the unique organic shape of the Palm Chair and Ottoman by David Francis. The airy design forms graceful curves from natural material to create a statement ensemble. The silhouette is a perfect fit for any outdoor environment.”


 

Bedroom: Contour Bed with Shelf Nightstands by Armin Driver, Ben Copeland and Tim Copeland for Copeland Furniture -- “Talk about delivering a new turn on mid-century modern! The clean, modern aesthetic in the Contour Bedroom Collection by Copeland Furniture is ideal for the 21st century.”


 

Green Leaf Award: Asken Wood Shawl by Mark Phillips for Phillips Collection -- “Here’s proof that “green” can be environmentally friendly and beautiful, too! (Using) recycled elements in a unique, fluid form is especially fresh.”
