Wayfair revenues jump 41.7% but loss also grows
    November 12,2014

Wayfair, the online home furnishings and décor retailer that went public last month, issued its first quarterly financial report this week, showing a 41.7% growth in revenue but a net loss of nearly $29 million.

The company, which gets the bulk of its revenues from five online operations, reported revenues of $336.2 million for the three months ended Sept. 30. That compares with $237.3 million in the same quarter last year.

The net loss totaled $28.9 million or 71 cents per share. That compares with a loss of $7.7 million or 19 cents per share in last year’s third quarter.

Higher expenses in sales and marketing, as well as general and administrative costs, accounted for the higher loss.

“We are very pleased with the third quarter results and Wayfair’s growth trajectory,” said Niraj Shah, the retailer’s CEO, co-chairman and co-founder. “We believe we are making the right investments today to drive long-term growth, and remain committed to both creating the best home goods shopping experience for our customers and to delivering long-term value for our investors.”

He said the number of active customers for its direct retail business hit 2.86 million on Sept. 30 — an increase of 61% from the same quarter last year — while the number of delivered orders during the quarter rose 48.6% to 1.31 million.

The average order value was $217, up from $206 in last year’s third quarter.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, revenues totaled $910.3 million, up 46.7% from $620.5 million in the first nine months of 2013.

The nine-month net loss totaled $92 million or $2.26 per share. That was up from a loss of $32 million or 77 cents per share in the comparable period.

In addition to its flagship Wayfair.com site, the retailer operates Joss & Main, an online flash sale site; AllModern, an online source for modern design; DwellStudio, which features fashion-forward modern furnishings; and Birch Lane, which features classic furnishings and home décor.
