What happens now with the wood industry in Central China?
    July 07,2016

From May 15-21, China Wood Importers Committee organized one wood importers delegation to mid-west China to visit ports, wooden door & furniture manufacturers, etc.

Wood Industry in Three Mid-Western Metropolises of China

Nowadays the annual demand of wood in Wuhan is around 10 to 14 million m³ while the demand in Chengdu is around 16 to 20 million m³. The steady development of the economy in mid-western cities in China and the possibility of supply shortage after the prohibition of the commercial cutting of the natural forest, make the construction of the harbours along the Yangtze River as well as the collecting and distributing centre of wood more and more important. Moreover, the customer demand also contributes to raw material upgrading in furniture manufacturing. Therefore, solid wood furniture is becoming an unavoidable developmental tendency.

Wuhan is considered a city with great potential in the development of wood industry. Its obvious problems of high cost for transporting, technology and devices could not be avoided, but it also shows some emerging signs.

By contrast, another city, Chengdu, the centre of southwest China, always chooses to import wood from cities like Luzhou or Chongqing along the Yangtze River. Additionally, the wood industry in Chengdu also imports wood by train from Russia, and is considering to import wood from North Europe in future.

In Chongqing, the local wood industry concluded that their development nowadays are restricted by the supply of wood. The upgrading of the consumer demand prompts them to seek a way to high quality raw materials.

The future of the wood industry in China

Based on long-term monitoring and market observation, new economic growth point will appear in the wood construction as well as the second decoration of existing residences and furniture updating. The construction of infrastructures in Central China is in full swing, and the development of new towns in rural areas and urban shantytowns transformation will drive the demand for furniture and home furnishing.
