WASHINGTON — Powell Company has launched a voluntary recall of 6,300 bean bag chairs that could pose a suffocation or strangulation hazard.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday. It said the Anywhere Lounger Bean Bag Chairs without a permanent zipper closure could result in young children ingesting or inhaling the small beads inside the chair.

There have been no reported injuries or incidents related to the chairs.

A Powell official said that the company discovered the problem and brought it to the attention of the CPSC. As part of the voluntary recall, it began sending out repair kids about a week ago and plans to have the matter fully resolved in about 90 days.

Made in China, the units were sold at furniture stores nationwide including Value City Furniture and Nebraska Furniture Mart and online at www.Groupon.com from June 2012 to February 2013 for about $100, the CPSC said.

Consumers have been advised to take the item away from young children and inspect it to see if the exterior zipper can be opened. If this zipper can be opened, the CPSC has advised consumers to request a free repair kit from Powell.
