One Year On at New Designers
Source:Furniture News     May 24,2016

More than 60 of the design world’s rising stars have been selected to display their work in One Year On at New Designers 2016, an exhibition for emerging design, from 29th June to 2nd July and 6-9th July, held at the Business Design Centre, Islington.

One Year On is a destination feature within New Designers that presents young, entrepreneurial designers in their first year of business. It runs across both parts of the show and covers all disciplines, from textiles, jewellery and ceramics to furniture, illustration and other innovative products.

The designers are selected by an independent panel of experts from across the industry, and are chosen on the strength of their work, flair and quality of product. They exhibit original, contemporary and innovative products that are tipped to be the iconic designs of the future. All exhibited work is available to purchase or commission, so visitors to One Year On can buy directly from designers at the show.

Designer Rheanna Lingham, owner and founder of Shoreditch store Luna & Curious, returns as curator for One Year On 2016. She comments: “My experience of working with such talented new designers last year was invigorating, so to be able to do it again is an honour. 2016 sees a brilliant new crop of designers with fresh ideas, accomplished using new technologies and traditional craftsmanship.

“I was struck by how many of the exhibitors are creating works that are so demanding in time and skill. We have embroideries that are intensely intricate and ceramics that are built up with paper thin layers of clay that demand immense concentration and talent.

“We also have a number of designers that are concerned with issues of waste and have created businesses developed on Zero Waste theories. From knitwear to homeware and furniture, these designers are taking responsibility for their material usage.

“This show really is a must-see for the sheer array of fantastic work, but also to hope that a morsel of the enthusiasm and excitement of these designers may rub off on us.”

Highlights will include: Jack Lennie, BDC New Designer of the Year 2015, whose downloadable, no weld motorcycle kit, Tinker, breathes a new lease of life into old engines; working together as Forest-and-Found, Abigail Booth and Max Bainbridge apply their shared love of making to turn foraged materials into homeware that creates a direct relationship with the natural world; Charles Dedman updates traditional cabinet making techniques for a contemporary market, in a range of furniture that incorporates turning and steam bending, and will be launching new additions to his stylish Turner range;

Thomas Pullin’s illustrations tackle complex ideas and simplify them into a contemporary, fun visual language; Jacky Puzey’s unique artisan approach to digital embroidery enables her to create vivid patterns through a rich palette of colour and unique material combinations; Emma Rule, one of New Ashgate Gallery’s Rising Stars for 2016, whose organic and tactile silverware, jewellery and lighting reflect the lines and rhythms found in the natural world;

Sculptor Beatrice Wall, who uses copper, silver and enamel to create unique decorative insects; Sein by Dan Vo, a high-end sustainable menswear range which uses zero-waste pattern cutting and seamless knitting technology to create refined garments that will appeal to a wide consumer audience; and Olivia Walker, who transforms thrown forms by meticulously building paper-thin shards of porcelain over their surface, making natural accretions and flowing organic forms.
