Otto leads the German online furniture market with 1.472 billion euros in sales, surpassing IKEA and Wayfair
    October 12,2021

Recently, German statistics website Statista released the latest Consumer Market Outlook data report. The report shows that in 2020, 14% of German furniture transactions were completed on online platforms, of which Otto is the largest furniture online platform, with annual net sales of nearly 1.5 billion euros.

Many consumers are more inclined to buy furniture offline and home stores are still the mainstream, and this is also the case in Germany. However, the German furniture market is still booming, and the report shows that total sales in 2021 are expected to reach 42 billion euros.

Many furniture e-commerce companies have noticed strong growth in their sales, which means that more and more furniture transactions are completed online.

For the whole year of 2020, thanks to the mail-order business model, Otto' s online furniture sales reached 1.472 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 37%. Among the top ten companies in online furniture sales, 3 companies have seen significant growth.

IKEA ranked second, with net sales of 655 million euros, an increase of 46%. Followed by Amazon, net sales reached 555 million euros; compared with the previous year, the growth was slightly less than 28%.

Wayfair ranks fourth, with net sales of 215 million euros in 2020, and the retailer has grown rapidly year-on-year to 40%. The fastest growing is Westwing. Although it ranks ninth with net sales of 126 million euros, it has grown by 59% between 2019 and 2020.

With these growth rates, it is expected that the net sales of many of the top ten online furniture and household goods stores in Germany will increase further. In this market, e-commerce companies have great potential to tap.
