ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Rebounding from a down month in July, U.S. bedding unit sales were up 6.3% in August from the same month a year ago while the dollar value of those shipments jumped 7.9%, according to the latest figures from the International Sleep Products Assn.

ISPA's Bedding Barometer, which reflects the performance of companies that account for a majority of bedding shipments, reported a 1.4% increase in the average unit price. It rose to $190.85 this August from $188.14 in August of 2009, according to ISPA.

For the first eight months of the year, bedding unit sales were up 9.1% and the dollar value of those shipments was up 8.5%. The average unit price is down 0.6% in that same time period.

ISPA said the 20 participating companies in its monthly reports account for about 64% of total bedding units and about 73% of the wholesale value of those units.
