With rising rent costs and growing populations facing major cities, many urban dwellers have been forced to get creative when designing their spaces. When you only have a few steps between your sleeping area and where you eat—if you even have a separate dining area—things can get tricky to organize. Thankfully, there are plenty of designers coming up with creative ways to incorporate the utmost functionality into one object. Carpeggi recently unveiled a series of space-saving furniture pieces at the Milan Furniture Fair, hinting at what the furniture of the future might look like.

There’s been a lot of buzz around Denis Santachiara’s Ca.Mia, a house-shaped inflatable bed that looks extremely cozy. When inflated, the mattress pops up into the shape of a little house. The bed is a more quirky take on your average inflatable mattress—and creates more privacy for the user.

Sakura Adachi created Tou, a seat that resembles an elegant bean bag. When you unzip it, you can actually pull out a pillow and blanket to use on the bag when you unfold it. This maximizes its usage, as it adapts to both sitting and sleeping. Once a user is down napping, they can simply zip everything back up.

Comfort obviously plays a big role in both products—as well as the rest of the collection. But the objects especially hint at the trend of cleverly-designed, small-space furniture.
