High Point Market, ASID announce design series

High Point Market

The High Point Market Authority, in partnership with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), has set the schedule for its educational seminar series for the Fall High Point Market (Oct. 22-26).

The Design Viewpoints Series (DVS) will take place Oct. 22-24 at the High Point Theatre, next to the Transportation Terminal in downtown High Point.

This Market, all four sessions will provide insight on the rapidly growing aging-in-place movement. The series will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 22, with an exclusive preview of the ASID-sponsored Public Broadcasting documentary, Thriving in Place: Designing Your Best Life, Now and Later. Following the preview, ASID CEO Randy Fiser will continue the conversation with the host of the documentary and Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt People’s Design Award winner Marianne Cusato. The three additional seminars will provide additional insight on how designers can align themselves with this growing market sector.

The Design Viewpoints Series sessions are free to interior designers and retailers attending Fall Market. Designers can earn up to 0.4 IDCEC-approved continuing education units (CEUs) by attending the program.

In a 2014 survey conducted by AARP’s Public Policy Institute (PPI), 87% of the 4,500 respondents aged 50 and over indicated their preference to remain in their homes and communities as they age. Given the sheer size of this demographic — Oxford Journal cites a 135% increase in this U.S. population segment from 2000 to 2050 — the aging in place movement will bring new design challenges and economic opportunities to the interior design and home furnishings industries.

“This is an exciting opportunity for buyers coming to High Point Market to expand their knowledge of a segment that could have an immediate impact on their businesses,” said Tom Conley, president and CEO of the High Point Market Authority.

“We expect rapid growth in the aging-in-place movement within the next decade,” Fiser said. “It is a fascinating area to research, and we are excited to share what we’ve learned during High Point Market.”
