MUJI plans to open 4-5 new flagship stores in China by the end of 2019, greatly increasing the number of flagship stores in the world’s largest overseas market.
The MUJI flagship store marketplace area is about 3,000 m2, 5 times of that of Chinese standard stores. MUJI has successively established flagship stores in Chengdu and Shanghai in 2014 and 2015, after which, they have no intention to open more flagship stores in China. It is after 3 years that MUJI opens flagship stores again, which lists Beijing and Nanjing, etc. as the alternate cities and plans to establish 4-5 flagship stores.
In recent years, MUJI has kept the store-opening speed of increasing over 30 stores every year in China. However, MUJI has slightly slowed down the store-opening speed in China in the fiscal year of 2017, decreasing to 29 stores. The total 229 stores have accounted for more than a half of MUJI’s total 457 overseas stores.
In addition to additionally establish 4-5 “global flagship stores” in China, MUJI has also accelerated the plan of originally opening 30 new stores in China every year, which is changed to newly open 50-60 stores in China annually and takes the third-tier cities as the development focus.
