Mattress imports from China soared last year, posting a 164.6% unit gain, according to government figures included in an industry report.
Last year China shipped about 4.34 million mattress units to the United States, the figures say.
The dollar value of Chinese mattress imports was up last year 158.6%, reaching about $427 million. The average unit price for Chinese mattress imports declined 2.3%, to $98.50, the government figures say.
The International Sleep Products Assn. breaks out the import figures, provided by the U.S. International Trade Commission, in its 2017 Mattress Industry Trends Report.
That report shows that China, Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom were the leading importers of mattresses to the United States last year.
China led the pack, with mattress import units of 4,335,065, while Mexico was second, with mattress import units of 1,038,108. Third was Canada, with mattress import units of 8,868, while mattress import units from the United Kingdom were 1,308, the government data said.
In dollars, China leads the field, with mattress imports valued at $426,996,000, compared to mattress imports from Mexico valued at $94,743,000, Canada, valued at $2,933,000, and the United Kingdom, valued at $1,173,000, the figures say.
There are considerable differences in the average unit price of mattress imports. Among major mattress importers, Mexico’s $91.27, a 5.7% decline compared to 2016, is the lowest. The average unit price for mattress imports from Canada jumped 22.1% last year, to $330.74, while it soared 112.0% for the United Kingdom, to $896.79.
For mattress supports, China is the leading supplier of imports. Those units increased 51% last year, to 575,698, while the dollar value of Chinese mattress supports was up 46%, to $27.4 million, the figures say. The average unit price for mattress supports from China was down 0.3% last year, to $47.58, the report said.
