Ikea’s U.S. stores are about to roll out a limited edition collection developed in collaboration with Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.
Van Beirendonck was a member of the Antwerp Six, a group of six designers who graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts between 1980–1981 with a distinctive new vision for fashion during the 80s.
His collection for Ikea – called Glodande, or “Glowing” in English – will be available in Ikea U.S. stores starting the last week in June. It encompasses bedding, dec pillow covers, pre-cut fabrics, rugs, stationery, shopping bags and tabletop.
“When I started with the Ikea project, I wanted to handle it almost like a fashion collection,” said Van Beirendonck. “I really wanted to gather a lot of inspirations, think about stories, think about ideas which could evolve into other things. I wanted to tell a story.”
The collection is based on his story of the Wondermooi – five cloud-dwelling creatures whose distinct personalities weave their way through the Glodande products.
“You never know what Walter will do next. I like that and want to bring more of this into Ikea,” said Henrik Most, creative leader at Ikea of Sweden. “The way he mixes this unpredictability with color, pattern and print are what make him the master of what he does. That is what IKEA learned from this fantastically wonderful and odd collaboration.”
