Australian shows announce design award winners

Fred, a table designed by Adam Raphael Markowitz, was the concept category award winner.


Furnitex, Australia’s trade furniture and furnishings fair, and Décor + Design 2014, a co-located interior products and furnishings show, have announced the 2014 winners of the Vibrant Visions in Design competition.

 

Part of the 2014 Furnitex fair that continues through Sunday, VIVID is an international design competition and includes student, commercial, concept, lighting and green categories. Winners and finalists will be showcased during the fair at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

 

The 2014 winners are Fabio Biavaschi (commercial), Yulia Holil (green), Jeewon Choi (student), Adam Raphael Markowitz (concept) and Rowan Page, Marinos Drake & Ilya Fridman (lighting).

 

Biavaschi received the commercial award for MEK_ac0, a chair inspired by Meccano, a building game for children. Holil was recognized in the green category for Sandwiched Shelf, a modular, adjustable freestanding shelving system that can be flat packed for reduced transportation impact. Choi received the student award for Flowlight, a pendant light made from a veneer sheet that is laminated to cardboard and the bended.

 

Markowitz won in the concept category for his Fred table. Judges described the table, made from sustainably sourced Australian timber (Tasmanian oak and jarrah), as “quite elegant and sophisticated with very fine detail.”

 

Page, Drake and Fridman earned the lighting award for their Diagrid Pendant, produced with 3D printing technology. Judges applauded the “excellent design” of the only entry using 3D printing in the lighting category.

 

VIVID 2014 featured more than 50 finalists, with a the judging panel consisting of Diana Corleto, creative director at Beacon Lighting; Gordon Tait of Tait Furniture; Jan Henderson, editor of Inside Magazine; Caecilia Potter, design director at Atticus & Milo; Christopher Boots of Christopher Boots; Tom Shaw, head of design at Jardan and Caroline Caneva — Curator. The category winners receive prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
