    Philips Lighting Expands Friends of Hue Program to Include Several North American Home Lighting Manufacturers

    Philips Lighting is expanding its Friends of Hue program to include several leading North American LED lighting luminaire manufacturers. Friends of Hue products benefit from ongoing over-the-air updates to seamlessly introduce new Philips Hue features and functionality.

     

    Philips Lighting is expanding its Friends of Hue program to include several leading North American LED lighting luminaire manufacturers: Access Lighting, Craftmade, ELK and ET2. The Friends of Hue partnership unites decorative lighting design with all the benefits of Philips Hue, enabling consumers to enjoy a greater choice of luminaires to enhance the look of their homes. Products by the respective partners are expected to launch in North America in Q1 and Q2 2018.

    Philips Lighting unveiled its new Philips GreenPower LED toplighting with a light spectrum optimized for cut rose cultivation at an event of the Philips Rose Expertise Group. The new GreenPower LED toplighting with cut rose spectrum allows growers to increase light levels year-round without increasing heat. During extensive trials undertaken by research institutes Delphy and Wageningen University, and monitored by experienced rose growers, the new lighting with cut rose spectrum improves the quality of the roses and is 40% more energy efficient compared to high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting.

    Co-hosted by China Association of Lighting Industry and China’s Lighting Capital – Guzhen Town, the 20th China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair (hereinafter referred to as GILF) was held concurrently with the Guzhen Lighting Manufacturing, Supply & Services Expo 2017 (hereinafter referred to as Guzhen Manufacturing Expo 2017) at Guzhen Convention & Exhibition Center, Zhongshan, China today (on October 30).     Philips Lighting add Baidu to its Friends of Hue Partner Program

    Philips Lighting announced that it has added Baidu to its ‘Friends of Hue’ partner program. Baidu, the Chinese language internet search provider, will ensure that DuerOS, its conversational artificial intelligence (AI) operating system (OS), is integrated with the Philips Hue connected lighting system for the home. This means that Philips Hue lights will work seamlessly with all smart devices embedded with DuerOS, from smart speakers to wearable devices, which can be easily controlled through voice commands.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience.
