    NIMS Separates Its Red Phosphor Patent Usages into Manufacturing and Application

    The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan has announced that the licensing scheme for its comprehensive patent on red phosphor has been changed since October 1, 2018.     Philips Lighting announces that it intends to repurchase 2.8 million of its ordinary shares from its largest shareholder Royal Philips. Today Royal Philips announced its intention to offer approximately 17.1 million shares in Philips Lighting, currently owned by Royal Philips, to institutional investors by means of an accelerated bookbuild offering (the “Offering”). The Offering represents approximately 12% of Philips Lighting’s issued share capital. Philips Lighting will not receive any proceeds from the sale.

    New Red Phosphor to Improve LED Energy Efficiency Co-Developed by University of Innsbruck and Osram

    A research team at the University of Innsbruck, Austria cooperated with Osram Opto Semiconductors to develop a new red phosphor with excellent luminescence properties which can make LED lighting more energy-efficient. The research article, titled “Sr[Li2Al2O2N2]:Eu2+—A high performance red phosphor to brighten the future” was published in Nature Communications on April 23, 2019.

    Adoption Rate of 3D Sensing in Smartphones is Estimated at 13.1% in 2018, while Apple Remains the Key Driver, Says TrendForce

    Apple’s launch of iPhone X has led to a wave of 3D sensing technology, bringing its key component—vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL)—into the spotlight. However, the number of VCSEL suppliers with mass production capacity is very limited due to technical barriers, leading to short supply of VCSELs and thus delaying Android camp’s plan to follow suit. TrendForce estimates the penetration rate of 3D sensing in smartphones will grow from 2.1% in 2017 to 13.1% in 2018, while Apple remains the major adopter.

    Philips Lighting Unveils New Philips GreenPower LED Toplighting Light Recipe for European Market at Rose Event

    Philips Lighting unveiled its new Philips GreenPower LED toplighting with a light spectrum optimized for cut rose cultivation at an event of the Philips Rose Expertise Group. The new GreenPower LED toplighting with cut rose spectrum allows growers to increase light levels year-round without increasing heat. During extensive trials undertaken by research institutes Delphy and Wageningen University, and monitored by experienced rose growers, the new lighting with cut rose spectrum improves the quality of the roses and is 40% more energy efficient compared to high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting.
