    China CDC publishes multilingual epidemic control manuals for COVID-19

    To allow timely sharing with other countries of the most up-to-date COVID-19 control and prevention information, particularly as developing countries often have weaker healthcare systems and resources, a critical multilingual manual has been published in both English and French by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. To comprehensively disseminate education on control and prevention of COVID-19 globally, based on the latest authoritative materials from China CDC, the World Health Organization and related periodicals -- with first-hand information from China, China CDC has organized experts and translators to develop the set of color publicity manuals containing FAQs regarding control and prevention of the epidemic(www.chinacdc.cn/en/COVID19). The compilation consists of such chapters as General Questions, Maternal and Child Health, Personal and Other Types of Protection, Diagnosis and Treatment. The manual, in a Q&A format, clarifies principal concerns of the general public in a systematic and focused manner, and has different color sketches tailored to African, ASEAN and South Asian countries, and is applicable for use by medical professionals and the general public alike. It can also be downloaded from the website to be circulated, or printed for distribution by Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, public health institutions of countries in Africa and other continents, foreign counterparts and the general public. At the same time, the manuals can also serve as materials to be used by Chinese experts when they go abroad for exchanges and training programs.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    EnOcean Presents the First Self-Powered Bluetooth® Sensor for Intelligent Lighting Control

    At CES 2019 in Las Vegas (January 8-11, 2019), EnOcean, world leader in energy harvesting wireless technology, will be launching a new ceiling-mounted solar-powered occupancy sensor (PIR) for Bluetooth lighting control systems communicating via Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE). It will be the first self-powered Bluetooth® occupancy sensor on the market integrating EnOcean’s field-proven energy harvesting technology and offering best customer experience by being maintenance-free, freely positionable, highly flexible and easy to install. The new sensor, in a small and functional housing design, will add to EnOcean’s Easyfit portfolio of battery-free Bluetooth® switches and perfectly support the company’s strategy to easily provide precious data for the digitalization of buildings using LED lighting systems as data backbone for intelligent control.     Driver Monitoring System Embeds Osram’s IR LED for Semi-Autonomous Driving

    Osram Opto Semiconductors has provided its IR LED and LED components to Joyson Safety Systems, a U.S. based mobile safety system provider, on its steering wheel to develop a semi-autonomous system to the new Cadillac CT6. The steering wheel equipped with the IR LED can monitor a driver’s behavior to ensure safety.

    ON Semiconductor Orders Veeco MOCVD System

    Veeco Instruments announced that ON Semiconductor has ordered its Propel High-volume Manufacturing (HVM) Gallium Nitride (GaN) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) system. Based on its successful beta evaluation of the Propel HVM tool, ON Semiconductor ordered the production-level Propel system for GaN power electronics manufacturing. As the industry’s first single-wafer cluster platform, the Propel GaN MOCVD system is specifically designed for high-voltage power-management devices used in data centers; automotive, information and communication technology; defense; aerospace and power distribution systems, among other applications.

    Safety & Security Benefits Of Outdoor Lighting

    Outdoor lighting plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of public places, streets, pathways, and walkways. To ensure the safety and security of these places, it is necessary to use the right lamps and appropriate fixtures with proper luminance. It also becomes necessary for lighting systems to follow the lighting standards and guidelines to ensure the safety of people, property, and public spaces. Outdoor lighting system is a prominent requirement for applications such as highways, roadways, airport perimeters, architectures, and other public places. LEDs are increasingly implemented in the outdoor lighting application to control the growing energy consumption of lights.     SIL Tracks Send Strong Signals About Lighting Prospects

    In no uncertain terms, the LED has been labeled a “disruptive” technology by many researchers and industry representatives. Indeed, it is and has been the overarching theme of the Strategies in Light (SIL) conference program and associated events since the first SIL conference in 2000. The lighting industry has been steadily marching beyond the LED component to the capabilities of digitally-controllable solid-state lighting (SSL), which can now be connected to other devices and to networks and the broader Internet — in what we know as the Internet of Things (IoT). Players in the SSL market are thinking outside of the light source and looking toward a disruptive service and business model, and to enabling emerging applications. There is no better way to illustrate the themes of the three 2018 Strategies in Light conference tracks than to begin with the words of conference advisory board members.

    The 20th China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair, Covering Lighting Design, Lighting Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing, Will Set Sail from a New Starting Point
