    Osram Opto Semiconductors said it is leading a government backed consortium to develop what Osram described as a high-power, mass-market ultraviolet (UV) LED chip.

    Ultraviolet light is used in a wide variety of applications such as curing (drying), disinfection, production, medicine, and the life sciences. Conventional non-LED sources such as mercury vapor lamps come with certain potential hazards. And many of the UV LED chips already on the market don’t yet economically emit at certain useful wavelengths, although we recently reported on a UV LED breakthrough announced by LG Innotek.

     

    “The partners have made it their goal to provide high-power UV LEDs to cover a wide variety of applications,” Osram said. “These LEDs will eventually replace conventional UV light sources, which often contain toxic mercury.”

     

    Osram said the new high-power chips “are also likely to open up new areas of application.”

     

    UV is an emerging field for LED makers. Suppliers include RayVio, Nikkiso, Vital Vio, Sensor Electronic Technology, and the aforementioned LG Innotek, among others.

    Since February 2017, a total of five research institutes and companies have been working on “UV Power”, a collaborative project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The partners have made it their goal to provide high-power UV LEDs to cover a wide variety of applications. These LEDs will eventually replace conventional UV light sources, which often contain toxic mercury, in areas such as production, disinfection, the environment, life sciences and medicine. UV LEDs are also likely to open up new areas of application.

    A global market leader of the Faucet industry, Yuhuan Dafeng Environment Egis Equipment, held a product launch event in Hangzhou, China and unveil its innovative product, UVC-Faucet. The UVC-Faucet integrates Klaran™ UVC LEDs into conventional faucet, which enables UV sterilization of water at the final point of water supply system. The product’s UVC LED would turns on simultaneously when people use water, allowing the water to be treated by UV irradiation before pouring. UVC-Faucet has passed the SGS test that it can wipe out E Coli by 99.99 percent under the condition of 1.5 liters to 2.0 liters per minute flowing rate.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    With a wide range of applications, UV LED is considered a new rising opportunity for the LED industry. LEDinside noted in the latest report, titled “2019 Deep UV LED Application Market- Sterilization, Purification, and Water Treatment Markets,” that UV LED market continues to increase with the curing market steadily grow and rising applications in sterilization for surface, air, static and flowing water. With these driving momentums, LEDinside forecasts that the UV LED market value will reach US$ 991 million in 2023.

    The Canada UVC-LED water disinfection technology provider, Acuva Technologies announced that its Strike Platform has been certified by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and become the world first UV-LED drinking water disinfection module platform.

    Technical University of Berlin Is Pushing the boundaries of UV LED power

    A German research team coordinated by Osram annouced that LEDs can replace mass-market high power UV light sources, and the purpose of this project is to make sources that are sufficiently long-lived to replace mercury-based sources in production, disinfection, life sciences and medicine, and to open up new applications.
