    Happy New Year to all of you in the world of LEDs and solid-state lighting (SSL). As we suggested in this space last January, 2017 brought some better times in terms of profits and margins, although things could always be better. Still, what became obvious was that the lighting industry would have to become a fast-paced technology industry for participants to prosper going forward. Meanwhile, the PennWell LED and Lighting Network, of which LEDs Magazine is a part, is having to adapt to the changing world as well. And even this January issue of our magazine has a new name — “LED & Lighting Industry Guide 2018” — reflecting the broader scope of the industry sector we cover.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    SIL Tracks Send Strong Signals About Lighting Prospects

    In no uncertain terms, the LED has been labeled a “disruptive” technology by many researchers and industry representatives. Indeed, it is and has been the overarching theme of the Strategies in Light (SIL) conference program and associated events since the first SIL conference in 2000. The lighting industry has been steadily marching beyond the LED component to the capabilities of digitally-controllable solid-state lighting (SSL), which can now be connected to other devices and to networks and the broader Internet — in what we know as the Internet of Things (IoT). Players in the SSL market are thinking outside of the light source and looking toward a disruptive service and business model, and to enabling emerging applications. There is no better way to illustrate the themes of the three 2018 Strategies in Light conference tracks than to begin with the words of conference advisory board members.

    Co-hosted by China Association of Lighting Industry and China’s Lighting Capital – Guzhen Town, the 20th China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair (hereinafter referred to as GILF) was held concurrently with the Guzhen Lighting Manufacturing, Supply & Services Expo 2017 (hereinafter referred to as Guzhen Manufacturing Expo 2017) at Guzhen Convention & Exhibition Center, Zhongshan, China today (on October 30).     NEMA Calls on Secretary of Energy to Complete Rulemaking for General Service Lamps

    ROSSLYN, Va.—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has formally requested that the Secretary of Energy complete a rulemaking for general service lamps (light bulbs) that Congress required in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA-2007). The Department of Energy (DOE) began the rulemaking in December 2013 and published two rules on January 19, 2017, addressing only one of the issues that Congress required for the rulemaking. These rules did not address the key issue on which Congress required DOE to act: whether or not standards for general service incandescent lamps should be amended to be more stringent than the standards for those lamps that Congress enacted in EISA-2007. Nor did the rules address robust standards for light-emitting diode (LED) lamps that were originally proposed by DOE in 2016.
