    New Applications for OLED: Integrating Wear Them into Clothing

    The German based research institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology, has developed OLED elements that can be integrated into textile. The development will be presented at the Electronics System Integration Technology Conference (ESTC) 2018 from September 18 – 21, 2018 in Dresden, Germany.



    Fraunhofer has developed button-sized OLED elements to showcase a possible approach of OLED integration on textile. The OLED element, named “O-button,” combines a wafer-thin foil-based OLED with a microcontroller on a conventional circuit board. Attached to conductive yarn on the textile, the OLED button is dimmable with supplied or controlled power with two-color-variable variants available.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute Develops Mobile Device Disinfecting Solution with UVC LEDs

    Worldwide technology builders are accelerating UVC LED developments for disinfecting applications aiming to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Lately we have seen many new products and technologies debuted and here comes a new UVC LED innovation from the German research center, Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Evaluation, which is part of the Applied System Technology AST branch (IOSB-AST).

    China CDC publishes multilingual epidemic control manuals for COVID-19

    To allow timely sharing with other countries of the most up-to-date COVID-19 control and prevention information, particularly as developing countries often have weaker healthcare systems and resources, a critical multilingual manual has been published in both English and French by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. To comprehensively disseminate education on control and prevention of COVID-19 globally, based on the latest authoritative materials from China CDC, the World Health Organization and related periodicals -- with first-hand information from China, China CDC has organized experts and translators to develop the set of color publicity manuals containing FAQs regarding control and prevention of the epidemic(www.chinacdc.cn/en/COVID19). The compilation consists of such chapters as General Questions, Maternal and Child Health, Personal and Other Types of Protection, Diagnosis and Treatment. The manual, in a Q&A format, clarifies principal concerns of the general public in a systematic and focused manner, and has different color sketches tailored to African, ASEAN and South Asian countries, and is applicable for use by medical professionals and the general public alike. It can also be downloaded from the website to be circulated, or printed for distribution by Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, public health institutions of countries in Africa and other continents, foreign counterparts and the general public. At the same time, the manuals can also serve as materials to be used by Chinese experts when they go abroad for exchanges and training programs.

    EnOcean Presents the First Self-Powered Bluetooth® Sensor for Intelligent Lighting Control

    RPI Study Demonstrates that The Best Combined Yield and Antioxidant Concentrations in the Lettuce was Observed Using LUXEON SunPlus Series LEDs

    The results of a controlled horticulture lighting study conducted by the NSF funded Center for Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications (LESA) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI, Troy, NY), have been released. The study, utilizing a variety of commercial LEDs, compared the effectiveness of different LEDs on the growth of red lettuce Rouxai. The best combined yield and antioxidant concentrations in the lettuce was observed using LUXEON SunPlus Series LEDs.

    LUXEON's New Products to SunPlus Series for Horticulture

    Lumileds recently introduced three new products in its LUXEON SunPlus Series of award winning LEDs for horticulture lighting. The LUXEON SunPlus Series is the only line of LEDs on the market to be tested and binned by photosynthetic photon flux (PPF). The portfolio of colors enables wavelength tuning for maximum crop yield in both greenhouse and vertical farming applications. The addition to the LUXEON SunPlus 35 Line of Far Red and Deep Red will enable designers of vertical farm and interweaving fixtures to tune the spectrum specifically for the crop being grown. The new LUXEON SunPlus CoB Line, available in Purple, is designed for greenhouse applications where attaining high PPF and fast time to market are top priorities.

    Analog Devices Partners First Sensor to Develop LiDAR Products for Autonomous Driving

    Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announced the collaboration with First Sensor AG to develop products aimed at speeding the launch of autonomous sensing technology serving unmanned automotive, aerial and underwater vehicles in transportation, smart agriculture, industrial manufacturing and other industries. As part of the collaboration, Analog Devices and First Sensor are developing offerings that shrink the LiDAR signal chain to enable higher system performance as well as reduce size, weight, power and cost for manufacturers designing sensing and perception technology into their autonomous safety systems. The companies also plan to develop other LiDAR products that will serve automotive and industrial manufacturing applications.

    Holst Centre and Partners Develop 15 Meter OLED and Flexible Lighting Electronics

    The Netherland-based research center, Holst Centre and Fraunhofer FEP have developed the world's longest single-device OLED which is 15 meters long. The development opens the door to 'endless OLEDs' that manufacturers and designers can then easily tailor to their own needs.
