Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute Develops Mobile Device Disinfecting Solution with UVC LEDs

Worldwide technology builders are accelerating UVC LED developments for disinfecting applications aiming to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Lately we have seen many new products and technologies debuted and here comes a new UVC LED innovation from the German research center, Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Evaluation, which is part of the Applied System Technology AST branch (IOSB-AST).

Light+Building 2018 Recap

Every two years the lighting community comes together for Light+Building (March 18-23, 2018) in Frankfurt, Germany, a blockbuster weeklong trade show where manufacturers showcase innovations and products. This year was no different. With an increase in exhibitors (up from 2,626 in 2016), a total of 2,714 manufacturers from 55 countries showcased new products across close to 2.8 million square feet of exhibition space. According to fair organizer Messe Frankfurt, more than 220,000 trade visitors (an increase from 216,610 in 2016) from 177 countries attended the show.

Scientists Reveal the Fundamental Limitation of In Concentration in InGaN Solid-State Devices

For the first time an international research group has revealed the core mechanism that limits the indium (In) content in indium gallium nitride ((In, Ga)N) thin films - the key material for blue light emitting diodes (LED). Increasing the In content in InGaN quantum wells is the common approach to shift the emission of III-Nitride based LEDs towards the green and, in particular, red part of the optical spectrum, necessary for the modern RGB devices. The new findings answer the long-standing research question: why does this classical approach fail, when we try to obtain efficient InGaN-based green and red LEDs?

According to the press release, the new name speaks to the idea “…that light becomes an intelligent language, which connects and conveys meaning.” The release goes on to indicate that the company will continue to use the Philips brand, under the existing licensing agreement with Royal Philips, for its products.
