    Plessey Commits to Launching First Monolithic Micro LED Displays

    Due to the fact that the damand for Micro LED displays is growing, Plessey decided to become a technology platform provider in order to get their technology out to the widest possible manufacturing, and launched the first monolithic micro LED displays.

     

    Plessey has also commenced an extensive licensing programme that will see the company license out its GaN-on-Silicon expertise to Micro LED manufacturers in line with its new business strategy of becoming the photonic industry’s foremost technology platform provider.Demand for Micro LED displays is accelerating. GaN-on-Silicon is the only technology platform capable of addressing all of the challenges involved with manufacturing Micro LED displays in high volumes and cost-effectively, Plessey intends to demonstrate its expertise in the field by being the first to manufacture a monolithic display based on Micro LEDs fabricated using a GaN-on-Silicon approach.

    Tunable white lighting in the classroom: The new ROI is ROO

    Throughout the past few years, we at LEDs Magazine have seen more solid-state lighting (SSL) product development targeted at educational environments. School officials, especially in the public-school arena, must manage strict budgets and plan strategically to obtain the best return on investment (ROI) possible, so the potential financial implications are important factors — first, the cost of premium equipment and installation, but then balanced against the possible payback due to energy efficiency initiatives and less maintenance. One consideration beyond the established cost reductions of SSL in institutional buildings such as schools is the possible impact of tunable white lighting in the classroom. Naturally, dimmability and other controls features such as granularity of color temperature can be customized to various classroom tasks and increase visual acuity. But what’s becoming even more appealing to educational administrators is the ability to influence less “visible” factors in the classroom, such as mood, behavior, and concentration. Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California, will draw more attention to so-called human-centric lighting applications as this, also known as lighting for health and wellbeing. One such presentation, “Lighting for pupils…Tunable white lighting in the classroom and the new ROI,” by Tricia Foster of Acuity Brands Lighting and Catherine Hollenshead of Estes, McClure & Associates (EMA), will feature a case study on a Texas school district’s first-hand experience using tunable white lighting in several classrooms. Here the speakers give a glimpse into the new classroom experience. They will offer up additional details during SIL on how ROI has evolved into “return on objective” (ROO) in such installations. — Carrie Meadows

    China CDC publishes multilingual epidemic control manuals for COVID-19

    To allow timely sharing with other countries of the most up-to-date COVID-19 control and prevention information, particularly as developing countries often have weaker healthcare systems and resources, a critical multilingual manual has been published in both English and French by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. To comprehensively disseminate education on control and prevention of COVID-19 globally, based on the latest authoritative materials from China CDC, the World Health Organization and related periodicals -- with first-hand information from China, China CDC has organized experts and translators to develop the set of color publicity manuals containing FAQs regarding control and prevention of the epidemic(www.chinacdc.cn/en/COVID19). The compilation consists of such chapters as General Questions, Maternal and Child Health, Personal and Other Types of Protection, Diagnosis and Treatment. The manual, in a Q&A format, clarifies principal concerns of the general public in a systematic and focused manner, and has different color sketches tailored to African, ASEAN and South Asian countries, and is applicable for use by medical professionals and the general public alike. It can also be downloaded from the website to be circulated, or printed for distribution by Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, public health institutions of countries in Africa and other continents, foreign counterparts and the general public. At the same time, the manuals can also serve as materials to be used by Chinese experts when they go abroad for exchanges and training programs.

    JBD Devises New Micro LED Technology to Make Ultra-Compact Micro LED Microdisplays.

    More and more companies, big and small, have utilized their self-developed methods to produce Micro LED products, whether they are Micro LED TVs, display modules, head-up displays (HUDs), or microdisplays. Through numerous collaborations between LED manufacturers and equipment providers, the production of Micro LED chips started to slightly increase. Research institutions have been trying to realize their ideas, trial after trial, to improve mass transfer technologies. As for young startups, they also devised several intricate technologies that can effectively address some of the technology barriers, which is attractive enough to get them helpful partners.

    Plessey to Showcase Micro LED AR/VR Glasses at CES 2019

    Plessey, the UK-based optoelectronic technology solutions provider, announced that it is going to demonstrate AR and VR glasses powered by Micro LEDs at CES 2019. Plessey’s Micro LEDs are put in action for AR applications with Vuzix, who has collaborated with Plessy in the development of Micro LED smart glasses.

    NEMA Calls on Secretary of Energy to Complete Rulemaking for General Service Lamps

    ROSSLYN, Va.—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has formally requested that the Secretary of Energy complete a rulemaking for general service lamps (light bulbs) that Congress required in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA-2007). The Department of Energy (DOE) began the rulemaking in December 2013 and published two rules on January 19, 2017, addressing only one of the issues that Congress required for the rulemaking. These rules did not address the key issue on which Congress required DOE to act: whether or not standards for general service incandescent lamps should be amended to be more stringent than the standards for those lamps that Congress enacted in EISA-2007. Nor did the rules address robust standards for light-emitting diode (LED) lamps that were originally proposed by DOE in 2016.

    Vuzix and Plessey Confirm Long-Term Partnership for Micro LED AR Smart Glasses

    Smart glasses and AR technology provider Vuzix and optoelectronic technologies developer Plessey announced an exclusive display device design and long-term supply agreement. With the agreement, the two companies will work together on AR products development and productions combining Micro LED light source from Plessey and smart glasses expertise of Vuzix.

    A Minimal Lamp Inspired By A Single Line

    A lamp doesn’t get more minimal than LIMINAL (try saying that 5 times fast). The lamp came about as part of a collaboration between CNVS, ATÖLYE Labs’ furniture brand, and architect/artist Buşra Tunç, and is a study in minimalism and multifunctionality. Due to its kinetic joints and adjustable modules, this simple lamp is flexible, both physically and usage-wise.

    Technology Developers On The Way To Overcome Difficulties Of Micro LED Mass Transfer And Assembly

    In order to commercialized Micro LED display, the current goal of Micro LED technology developers is to reduce production cost and improve yield through optimizing manufacture process. One obstruction to the goal comes from the production process of mass transferring and bonding, as assembling million Micro LED chips to targeted substrates poses a great challenge for display makers.

    Nitride Filed Patent Infringement Lawsuit against Digi-Key and RayVio in Tokyo

    On July 12, 2018 (Japan time), Nitride Semiconductor Co., Ltd. ("Nitride") filed a patent infringement lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court against Digi-Key Corporation d/b/a Digi-Key Electronics ("Digi-Key"), which sells UV-LED products on the internet that are manufactured by RayVio Corporation ("RayVio"), a CA-based UV-LED manufacturer, and RayVio. In the complaint, Nitride is seeking injunction(including destruction of infringing products) and damages, asserting that Digi-Key and RayVio infringe Nitride’s patent (JP 3,285,341, “Method for Manufacturing Gallium Nitride Compound Semiconductor”) by manufacturing and selling the UV-LED products.

    Plessey Announces Partnership with Jasper Display for Monolithic Micro LED Displays

    Plessey Semiconductors has reported its partnership with Jasper Display Corp (JDC) for using JDC’s silicon backplane to drive the monolithic Micro LED displays produced by Plessey’s proprietary GaN-on-Si wafers.
